The Denver Broncos started their 1st round pick Bo Nix on the field and he impressed, today we will go over his chances at becoming QB1, every single drive between the Broncos QB’s. Who will be Jordan Love’s backup incase something we’re to happen. And Tim Patrick’s impressive game.
1st Quarter:
The Packers ended up getting a touchback for their first drive of the game with the Packers giving Sean Clifford the start. Clifford had a disappointing first drive with his first play of the game mishandling the snap and fumbling but recovering his own mistake. On the second play, Patrick Surtain II gets a nice stop behind the line to put the Packers in a 3rd and long situation. Packers decided to test the Broncos 24 year old, Riley Moss on a deep ball where he was able to make a difference and lock down the receiver. The Packers weren’t ready to pull their offense off just yet, keeping them out there for a 4th down conversion try. Packers called the same play, testing Mcmillian this time who gets his hand in there for the Deflection.
Broncos get the ball in amazing field position, with Bo Nix taking the field for his first start this preseason with his first play of the night being a pitch to Javonte Williams for a solid 7 yard gain. Bo Nix then lined up in the shotgun on 2nd and 3 connecting with TE Adam Trautman for the first down. Bo Nix then went straight to the air again, finding a hole in between the Packers defender and Tim Patrick for a 4 yard gain, then connecting again with Patrick for a 1st down. Sean Payton decided to test Bo Nix again on a wheel route to Javonte Williams, Bo Nix is now 3/3 at this point. Red Zone now for the Broncos and Payton decides to go straight to the air as the ball is snapped and the Packers are blitzing and the pocket starts to collapse. Nix runs to his right, surveys the field, looks like he is gonna scramble but instead finds a open Javonte Williams for a TOUCHDOWN. After a booth review though, it was found that Bo Nix stepped over the line of scrimmage which if you aren’t familiar with NFL rules, Bo Nix would have had to run with the ball since he passed the line of scrimmage. Quarterbacks are only allowed to pass behind the blue line/line of scrimmage on the field. The Touchdown was called back which forced the field goal team onto the field on 4th down. Despite the penalty, Nix took huge advantage of the field position given to him and turned it into a 3/3 drive. Getting some points on the board for the Broncos. His touchdown pass might have gotten called back but that doesn’t change his awareness of the pocket collapsing. Seeing linebackers playing QB spy, and instead of not converting on a scramble, finds a open Williams in the endzone. A solid drive for Nix which makes it 5 scoring drives this offseason for Nix.
Denver Broncos 3 – Green Bay Packers 0
The Packers and Sean Clifford will look to improve on that quick 3 and out from the previous drive and Wil Lutz has a impressive kickoff, under this new kickoff format, the goal is too get it right at the 1 yard line, to give your team the best chance at breaking through the wall of defenders and getting to the reciever. Packers get a 26 yard return after Lutz kick to the 1 yard line. Clifford and Ben Sims 2nd year player for the Packers, connected on the first play of the drive for a solid 10 yard gain which moved the chains immediately and put the Packers in their first earned 1st down of the day. The Packers decide to test the Broncos defensive line with a run up the middle which ultimately gets stopped before anything big happens. 3 yard gain for the Packers which makes it 2nd and 7. The Packers 4th play of the drive was ultimately called back after a holding penalty which forced them to re try 2nd down but 10 yards back then they were. 2nd and 17. Packers decide to test the line again with Alex Singleton from the Broncos getting a amazing stop for a no gain. 3rd and 17 and the Packers go for a screen play gaining 10 yards but not enough for the first down. Packers send the punting team out and the Broncos go off the field celebrating their second straight stop of the game.
Bo Nix goes out for his second drive of the game and looking to make it 6 scoring drives for him this preseason with Sean Payton calling a run on the first play for a solid 8 yard gain as the Packers read the offense completely wrong and we’re lined up in Man and their linebackers deep in zone. Broncos then give the ball the FB Michael Burton for a 1st and 10. Broncos then set up a HB Screen for another 1st down. Nix then lines up in shotgun formation, starts the play and trips over his lineman. Pocket collapses quickly and Nix runs out of the pocket to avoid defenders and a sack and throws it away. 1st incompletion for Rookie Bo Nix tonight against the Packers. 3rd and 9 and Payton has Rookie Bo Nix line up in gun formation and fakes a run play to Javonte Williams and slides to his right and finds a hole in between 3 Packers defenders and Tim Patrick! 1st down for the Broncos as Tim Patrick is having a impressive game with solid catches. Patrick who has been dealing with injuries for the past 2 years is showing all the Broncos fans why they missed him so much. An a amazing job by Bo Nix who was able to find the hole and connect with Patrick. With 3 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter, Payton turns to Jaleel Mclaughlin for a run play and gets a first down as time expires in the first quarter and the rain starts to fall.
2nd Quarter , Broncos lead 3-0
Opening up the second quarter, Broncos lineman get caught by the refs for a holding call which puts them at 1st and 20. Sean Payton puts Sutton into the game and after a amazing route ran by Sutton who was able to create separation between him and a Packers defender in man coverage, catches a pass from Nix to complete a a 23 yard gain, and puts the Broncos in 1st and Goal. Sean Payton turns to Mclaughlin again for a 2 yard gain, to make it 2nd and goal. Another pass play for Nix to prove that he should be QB1 and he connects with Tim Patrick! TOUCHDOWN! Bo Nix and Patrick connect again and this time its for Patrick’s first touchdown in front of the Broncos home crowd in over 2 years. Patrick runs to the right side of the field and gives a Mile High Salute to all the fans. After the game Patrick thanked the fans for being there for the past 2 years and always motivating him.
Denver Broncos 10 – Green Bay Packers 0
Clifford leads out the Packers offense again on a drive where it seems like they need to get some points. Sean Clifford was tested on two passing plays with the Broncos starting defense making impressive stops at the line for either a no gain or a 1 yard pickup. Alex Singleton is impressing here tonight making both those stops and on 3rd and 9, Zack Allen blitzes through the offensive line and wraps up QB Sean Clifford for a sack and a 12 yard loss. Packers are forced to send their punting team out as J.L Skinner breaks through the line, almost makes contact with the ball for a block but makes contact with the kicker. Skinner with a solid job almost blocking the kick but forcing a yellow flag. I like the grit but he’s gonna need to learn to not make contact with the kicker cause that could be costly come regular season in a 2 minute situation where the Broncos need the ball back. Broncos we’re able to force another deflection on a pass and stopping a rush from bursting out to nothing bigger then a 6 yard gain. DEN officially get their 3rd stop of the game.
The Broncos have been firing on all cylinders on Offense and Defense with the Offense looking to make it 3 straight scoring drives to match the Defense’s 3 straight stops so far. If they wanna do it, they are gonna have to do it with Quarterback Jarrett Stidham who is checking into the game for Nix as they are competing for that QB1 position in Denver. Perine who needs to have a big game to give the Broncos staff any reason to keep him as their RB room is super stacked. Perine runs through the middle but gets stopped for a 2 yard gain. Stidham lines up in the gun and takes his first sack on his first passing play. Stidham tests the air again but unfortunately has a incompletion. Stidham then tested the air once again and connects with Greg Duchich on a short pass who is able to make it a medium gain! Evading 2 defenders before getting stopped. Perine unfortunately gets stopped at the line again which forces a 2nd and 10. Dulchich and Sitdham connect again to make it 3rd and 1 and Payton calls for another passing play and Esteman drops a easy pass at the line. Payton decides to leave the offense out there and its a False Start. Number 63, his second penalty of the day. Which leaves Stidham’s chances at converting, completely off the table as Payton calls the offense off the field. Riley Dixon made the drive a little bit less hurtful for Broncos fan, delivering on a solid punt which gets touched by the Broncos at the 4 yard line. Broncos will look to make it 4 straight stops and Jonah Ellis who was banged up on a play earlier, is back taking the field for the Defense.
The Packers are desperate for a score here as the time winds down here in the 2nd quarter as the Broncos defense has been firing on all cylinders here. Packers open up the drive with a 5-yd run. Packers attempt another run up the middle but Mathis stops them at the line. 3rd and 5th and Sean Clifford and Malik Heath connect for a 1st down as Nik Bonitto was super close to a sack but Clifford was able to get out of it. 1st down play and Bonitto is able to get a huge tackle for a no gain. 3rd and 10 and Bonitto is able to get a huge sack! This drive has been all about Bonitto here. Packers call a timeout. Clifford and the Packers decide to go for it again on 4th down as the pocket quickly collapses and he scrambles for a 11 yard pickup.
2 Minute Warning. Broncos 10-0.
Clifford is in the pocket and throws a pass to Carlton for a 8yd gain but a roughing the passer call is out on Jonah Ellis. 15 yards. Clifford attempts another pass but it’s a INTERCEPTION!
A huge turn of events as the Broncos are able to get a 56 yard return and put the Broncos into amazing field position as the first play for Stidham sees all his receivers covered heavily, he decides to scramble out of the pocket to the right, breaks a tackle and lays out 44 R.Gorsoth. TOUCHDOWN! Jarrett Stidham runs it in himself for a solid play. Extra point is good.
17-0 Broncos. 37 Seconds.
Packers had enough for one play which was stopped by Nik Bonitto. Halftime. Broncos lead into halftime. 17-0. Broncos receive the 2nd half kickoff.
Denver Broncos 17 – Green Bay Packers 0
The start of the 3rd quarter was disappointing for both teams as Stidham tried to target Marvin Mims Jr but gets picked off by Kristian Welch. Packers then aren’t able to do much with that as it’s another 3 and out for the Packers. The Broncos opened up their second drive with a Alex Forsyth holding penalty. Forsyth who is battling for the starting center position. Needs to have a cleaner game. Then a 21 yard incompletion with some solid defending by the Packers. Perine who i mentioned needed to have a big game, gets a 2-yd pickup and a 5-yd catch but brings out the punt team.
Packers open up their drive desperate to do something here. As they open up the drive passing and Strnad blocks a pass. A solid read by the LB. Merriweather from the Packers gets a 7-yd rush. 3rd and 3 and it’s a fumble! Bonitto who is having a amazing game, forced the fumble, and Ellis recovered.
Zach Wilson enters the game and his first play of the game is a pitch to Estime. 2 yard rush. Then is was a unfortunate 2 straight incomplete passes to Brandon Johnson. The pocket collapsed on Wilson’s first attempt as Wilson did his best to extend the play but the ball was dropped by Johnson. It’s a 3 and out for the Broncos as Wil Lutz kicks the field goal to make it a 20 point ball game.
Broncos 20-0
Michael Pratt, the other man fighting for Jordan Love’s backup spot finally nets his 2nd completion of the night as it’s a 4-yd catch to Joel Wilson. Toure and Pratt also connect on a 10-yd pass gaining a solid 1st down. Pratt gaining momentum this drive. Tillman from the Broncos is able to get a amazing stop behind the line. Pratt pitches to his RB Wilson for a 3-yd gain. Which ultimately set up for Pratt to test the Broncos secondary but short throws Malik Heath. Packers send out the punt team.
Wilson and Broncos open up as again the refs throw a yellow flag and it’s another holding call on Alex Forsyth. Badie had a 27 yard run that gets called back to what should have been a 1st and 10, is now a 1st and 20. Broncos are now deep in their own field as Zach Wilson initiates a play and Alex Forsyth misses a block, and Wilson is forced to take a sack and it’s a SAFETY! Packers finally put some points on the board.
20-2 Broncos
Packers open up this drive late in the 3rd quarter as Pratt is able to connect with Melton for a 11-yd gain and a 1st down. They then handoff to Wilson that breaks through the line and a tackle gaining 15 yds.
4th Quarter Begins
Packers are finally in Broncos territory as i think this is the first time the Packers have seen this side of the field all night as they hand off to Wilson again for a 4-yd gain. Pratt then connects with Sam Toure for a 7-yd catch. Merryweather gets his chance at running the ball getting a 4 yard gain but the yellow flag is out and it’s a holding call. Lecitus Smith is the offender. Jalen Wayne then attempts to get the first down but is stopped short only gaining 8 yards. Packers solid drive comes to a complete halt as the FG team comes out to attempt a 47 yd FG but misses it. Broncos run defense has been exceptional tonight.
Broncos send Wilson out again after a unfortunate miscue by Forsyth. Broncos line has yet another miscommunication as Brevin Allen gets a sack from the Packers. Estime from the Broncos is able to find a hole for a solid 10-yd pickup. Badie then makes a impressive catch at the sideline which is ruled incomplete. Payton challenged the call but the call upheld. Payton and the Broncos lose a timeout as the Broncos are forced to a three and out.
Packers then tried their best to put some points on the board but a 3 and out and a failed 4th down conversion ultimately ended their chances. That is their 3rd turnover on downs today.
The Broncos then later killed clock for the rest of the game as Zach Wilson and the Broncos drove down the field and was able to connect with Tyler Badie for a 7-yd TD pass.
Broncos win 27-2
The Broncos played most of their starters against the Packers 2nd and 3rd team but that still doesn’t deny the impressive performances that defensive players like Jonah Ellis and Zach Allen both getting a sack and Nik Bonitto forcing a fumble with multiple Broncos combining for tackle’s for losses. The offensive side of things didn’t disappoint either with the Broncos combining for 263 yards. Converting on 3/4 red zone visits and converting 7 out of 13 3rd downs. Tim Patrick had many impressive catches and a touchdown ending his day with 30 yds. But getting Bo Nix out of multiple situations. Javonte Williams also had a solid day for 32 yards on 3 carries. Courtland Sutton had 1 reception, 1 target and 22 yards. A solid catch and route running to extend a drive for Nix.
Now let’s talk about the QB Battle. Bo Nix impressed in his start for the Broncos converting on all his passes on his first drive, scrambling out of pressure, making solid passes, looking for the right receivers and getting his 6th scoring drive of the preseason. Nix ended his day 8/9, 80yds, and 1 TD also rushing for 12 yards on 3 attempts. Also ending his day with a 140.7 rating. Nix showed Sean Payton every single reason why he should be the starter and when Nix was asked after the game his thoughts on if he should be QB1, he said he doesn’t make the decisions. Sean Payton still hasn’t announced a QB1 yet in Denver but this Week 2 performance has solidified the QB1 for me in Denver, and that’s Bo Nix.
Jarrett Stidham’s had two drivers overwhelmed by penalties once again but showing solid promise running in a play and putting his body on the line. Stidham had some questionable miscue’s with his receivers that in my eyes kind of fell into his lap but nonetheless solidified his spot as QB2 to Nix.
Wilson went 2/6 and allowed the Packers only score of the night on a safety. Yes i know it was all Alex Forsyth’s fault but in the stats, it falls into Wilson’s lap. And his 2/6 performance with a single TD. I know there is another week of preseason but if i had to pick my roster right now. Wilson would be my number 3. I hope he has a better performance next week so he can be traded for the Broncos for solid value or just improve his value.
Broncos QB Depth Chart Prediction
QB1: Bo Nix
QB2: Jarrett Stidham
QB3: Zach Wilson
Alright, now let’s talk about the Packers. After watching both backups in the Packers week 2 preseason game. I have to say im worried. In the worse case scenario if Jordan Love we’re to go out for a extended period of time. They do not have the best depth at QB currently. Both QB’s combined for under 100 yds with neither of them finding the endzone. I hope Week 3 is a different scenario but if i was the Packers front office, i’d be pounding the alarm looking for another QB and getting ready to drop one of two of these backups.
