Bear Sports News

One story that seems to have been forgotten due to the Bowman controversy but this one here is spicy, NASCAR over the weekend, told the AP (Associated Press) that they were made aware of a team engineer who sold set up information to a rival team. Now NASCAR won’t be able to do anything about this until either team issues a complaint with NASCAR or if they decide to get legal teams in this. Until then, NASCAR can’t really comment on the situation but I have the facts here on what you can expect.

  • According to the AP, six anonymous team executives spoke to them and confirmed it was a team member from Joe Gibbs Racing. JGR currently has two cars racing for a cup title.
  • According to the six anonymous executives, it was said that the engineer had been exploring options with other teams and the offseason quickly approaches. They confirmed that they did talk about potential employment
  • NASCAR said that they are aware that the information was exchanged to a team that’s currently not in the playoffs, and the engineer was paid in cash for this information.
  • As mentioned before, unless this case goes to court or if a team issues a complaint with NASCAR, their hands are tied. They can not do anything except answer questions that we already know the answer to.
Drivers approach turns 7 and 8 at the Charlotte ROVAL

Now since NASCAR isn’t allowed to do anything, they aren’t even really speaking on the issue. But this could create a bigger issue over time if NASCAR doesn’t do anything about this, it can just start a chain reaction of engineers getting big paydays to share setup information. Now teams manage their day-to-days so Joe Gibbs can fire said engineer who shared this information. But until NASCAR lays its foot down and notifies the drivers and teams that serious repercussions will follow if this happens again. I wouldn’t be surprised if we hear another situation very similar to this one.
