Yes you read that headline right, Ohtani’s 50/50 ball, just beat the previous high-water mark set by Mark McGwire’s 70th home run ball, which sold for $3.05 million in 1999. After a total of 40 bids in total, the auction closed up with the winner paying the 4.3m.
Now you may be asking, why did it hit the auction instead of it being in Ohtani’s hands? Well the Dodgers offered the man who caught it, a ball and a bat. He ended up declining the Dodgers request, got the ball authenticated and left the ballpark, seemingly already looking at what website he will put the auction on.
Ohtani is the sole member of the 50/50 club, which means he snagged 50 stolen bases and 50 home runs in a single season, the 50/50 feat had never been done in the MLB until Ohtani.
Days after the auction was completed, Ohtani will complete some history of his own, taking the field in his first-ever World Series. Ohtani will be looking to lead the Dodgers to their second title in less then 5 years.
