Well, the Dodgers are just one win away here from walking away with a World Series, they will be looking for the sweep in New York, but let’s not count out the Yankees just yet, there have been only 4 times in professional sports history that a team has came back from a 3-0 deficit, now lets see what their odds are and the previous teams who have done it in the past.

NHL

1942 Stanley Cup Finals – Toronto Maple Leafs VS Detroit Red Wings

It was 1942, and it was the first-ever Stanley Cup to reach seven games, the Detroit Red Wings were out to an early 3-0 lead following a 3-2 win in Game 1, then a 4-2 win in Game 2. Game 3 was a 5-2 win for the Red Wings. then the momentum shifted in Game 4, following a 4-3 win over the Red Wings, it seemed like the Red Wings just had an off game and maybe wanted to go back and close it out in Detroit. But in Game 5, the momentum went all to the Maple Leafs locker room, a 9-3 win, secured the win in Game 5, then in Game 6, the Leafs held the Red Wings to a shutout, winning the game 3-0 and evening out the series 3-3. To Game 7 we went and Syd Howe from the Red Wings was able to put the Red Wings out to a lead with 1:45 remaining in the 2nd period. Then the Maple Leafs came out of the tunnel in the third period and were able to secure 3 goals in less than 10 minutes, to secure their Stanley Cup and the first team to complete the reverse sweep in Stanley Cup history, till this day, they are the only team to complete the comeback.

1975 Quarterfinals – New York Islanders VS Pittsburgh Penguins

As most of these games we will talk about, it started with the Penguins going out to an early 3-0 lead putting the Islanders in a very rough situation if they wanted any chance at continuing their hopes for a Stanley Cup, then Game 4 went the Islanders way and gave their fans some little hope after an impressive 3-1 victory over the Penguins. The Islanders scored 4 goals in both Games 5 and 6, which was just enough for them to bring the series to a far different scenario then the Penguins thought they would be in. Then in Game 7, Ed Westfall was the hero for the Islanders being the lone goal scorer for the night, the Islanders won the game 1-0 and clinched the series, 4-3, being the second team in NHL history to complete the reverse sweep in the postseason.

2010 Conference Semifinals – Philadelphia Flyers VS Boston Bruins

The Bruins are the ones on the wrong side of history on this one, following an impressive win in Game 1 that needed overtime to find a winner, then a 3-2 win in Game 2, and a 4-1 win in Game 3, once again, another team had their backs towards the wall, and in Game 4, it seemed like the Bruins we’re going to send Philadelphia packing but they kept it close all game and forced it into overtime, then a skate-off goal Simon Gagne, clinched Game 4 for Philly to give them another chance to continue this series and potentially making history of their own. Then an impressive win in Game 5 where Philly was able to shut out the Bruins 4-0, to bring the series to 3-2, just two wins away from advancing into the next round of the playoffs. Game 6, the Bruins were able to keep it close but it was Philly bringing home the W to tie the series. Then it was Simon Gagne who was once again the hero in Game 7, with a goal in the third period, to bring the Flyers’ lead to 3-2, which was ultimate all the Flyers needed to walk away victorious and keep their chances alive for another round of postseason hockey.

2014 First Round – Los Angeles Kings VS San Jose Sharks

The San Jose Sharks outscored the Kings in the first two games 13-5, two very impressive wins to put their lead 2-0 in this matchup, Game 3 the Kings were able to keep it closer and force overtime but it was Patrick Marleau from the Sharks in the first OT period to win the game for San Jose. The Sharks we’re riding some big momentum heading into Game 4 but it seemed to hit a huge brick wall. The Kings won Game 4, six to three. Then in the next two games, outscored the Sharks 7-1, evening the series 3-3 heading into Game 7. Once again, it was the Kings absolutely dominating the Sharks, winning the game 5-1, and advancing to the second round of the NHL playoffs. The Kings then went on to win the second round, 4-3. Then the same result in the Conference Finals. In the Stanley Cup Finals, the Kings we’re able to beat the Rangers 4-1, only needing 5 games to close this one out, compared to the seven that we’re needed in every series played this postseason.

MLB

2004 ALCS – Boston Red Sox VS New York Yankees

Now the Yankees will be looking to turn it around, so this time around they are on the right side of history instead of being the first team in MLB history to blow a 3-0 lead but lets break down that 2004 series.

The Yankees opened up Game 1 with a win over the Red Sox 10-7, it was Hideki Matusi from the Yankees who was responsible for driving in half of the Yankees runs that day with 5 RBI’s that day. David Ortiz also had an impressive 2-out RBI triple but it wasn’t enough for the Red Sox to secure the win. Game 2 wasn’t as impressive as Game 1 was, as this one only provided 12 hits, combined by both teams. The Yankees won that game 3-1 and Gary Sheffield was the only player from either team to have a multi-hit night. In Game 3, the Yankees and the Red Sox both combined for 37 hits and 27 runs during this one. With Gary Sheffield, Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matusi, and Bernie Williams from the Yankees, all had 3+ hits and Orlando Cabrera and David Ortiz also had 3+ hits. The Yankees won this one 19-8 over the Red Sox. At this point, the Red Sox had been out-scored 32-16, but it would all take a turn here soon enough. In Game 4, the Red Sox needed 3 extra innings to win this one but regardless, we’re about to take the win, 6-4 (12). In Game 5, the Red Sox once again needed some extra innings to get this one done, playing 8 extra innings in 2 games, but the Red Sox we’re able to walk away with another extra innings win, 5-4. Boston then went on to win Game 6, 4-2. Leaving Yankees players, staff and fans, stunned at what was going on with the team. At the Yankees home, it was the Red Sox who came out and sent the Yankees packing, 10-3. Holding the Yankees to only 5 hits in Game 7.

Yankees odds of coming back

There have been only 2 teams in MLB history to force a Game 7 in postseason history after falling 3-0. The most recent one was the Astros but lost in Game 7 to the Rays. Then the Red Sox doing it in 2004. The Yankees odds aren’t pretty but I’m here to break them down.

Tracked till the start of the modern era – 1904

There have been 35 different instances where a team has gone up 3-0, and once you fall to 3-0, there really isn’t much hope for you to come back, for the Yankees to force a Game 7, there is only a 5.4% chance for them to make it, and a 2.7% chance to then win the whole thing.

There is a 12.50% chance that the Yankees can win tonight and force a Game 5.

Then a 7.8% chance into forcing a Game 6.

Pretty much, the odds are heavily stacked against the Yankees to come back and potentially win this World Series. Now the Yankees would be the first MLB team in World Series history to complete the reverse sweep if they were to come back and win this one. But never, say never am I right?
