We had a 8 game slate last night for the first night of the Emirates Cup, the new in season tournament, which we broke down in a story yesterday, which you can find here.

But that 580k prize is appealing to lots of players, which proved last night as we had some big performances take place last night. Today will be a breakdown on all 8 games with teams each top performers and a breakdown on the most notable games from the slate last night.

Dallas Mavericks 117 – Golden State Warriors 120

Luka Doncic – 31 PTS – 8 REB – 6 AST – 3 STL

Stephen Curry – 37 PTS – 6 REB – 9 AST – 2 BLKS

Last night was Klay Thompson’s return to the Bay Area since his departure from Golden State, but he did impress in his return, being 2nd on the team in scoring last night and shooting 6/12 from the 3-point line including two impressive back-to-back 3’s, where he hit Stephen Curry’s signature move.

But it was Curry who spoiled Klay’s return to the bay after hitting a 3-pointer with 27.5 left on the clock. Quentin Grimes also was able to narrow the Warriors lead as the clock ticked down but after a foul to Curry, he sank both of them to bring the Warriors lead to 3, with 12.9 left on the game clock. Luka Doncic was chosen to take the game-tying shot but wasn’t able to connect. The Golden State Warriors win and put a win in the NBA Emirates Cup standings.

Minnesota Timberwolves 108 – Portland Trail Blazers 122

Naz Reid – 28 PTS – 6 REB – 1 AST

Jerami Grant – 21 PTS – 2 REB – 8 AST

Phoenix Suns 120 – Utah Jazz 112

Devin Booker: 31 PTS – 2 REB – 4 AST – 2 STL – 2 BLKS

John Collins – 29 PTS – 10 REB – 4 AST – 3 STL

Toronto Raptors 85 – Milwaukee Bucks 99

Gradey Dick – 32 PTS – 5 REB – 3 AST

Giannis Antetokounmpo – 23 PTS – 4 REB – 7 AST – 4 BLKS

New York Knicks 111 – Philadelphia 76ers 99

Paul George – 29 PTS – 10 REB – 3 AST – 3 STL

Karl-Anthony Towns – 21 PTS – 13 REB – 6 AST

Last night was Joel Embiid’s first game back since the beginning of the season kicked off and his performance wasn’t one to remember. As 8 of his 13 points came from the free throw line, fans were disappointed with his performance and despite a solid night from Paul George. It just wasn’t enough to close out the night against the strong Knicks, led by OG Anunoby. Only 8 Knicks players saw the floor last night and the starters played 34 minutes or more.

Josh Hart also impressed, having his first triple-double of the year and his fifth double-double of the season.

The Knicks move to 5-5 on the season, and are 4th in the Eastern Conference. While the Sixers fell to 2-8. A rough start to the year for Philadelphia fans.

Orlando Magic 114 – Charlotte Hornets 89

Lamelo Ball – 35 PTS – 6 REB – 7 AST

Franz Wagner – 32 PTS – 8 REB – 5 AST

Atlanta Hawks 117 – Boston Celtics 116

Dyson Daniels – 28 PTS – 3 REB – 7 AST – 6 STL

Jaylen Brown – 37 PTS – 5 REB – 2 AST

Atlanta started the night as underdogs, especially with the news that Trae Young would not be available to play. The Hawks went into TD Garden, where the Celtics play and despite having only a 4 man rotation, the Hawks kept the game close through the first quarter until the Celtics came out in the 2nd and 3rd quarters to a big lead. With the Celtics at a time being up by 15 points, and then the tide changed. The Hawks outscored the Celtics in the third quarter to narrow down the Celtics lead, then in the fourth quarter, even it out and come out with the victory following a putback layup by Onyeka Okongwu.

The Hawks impressed NBA fans by being able to comeback on the defending NBA champions, especially without their star Trae Young. Larry Nance Jr and Okongwu both combined for 34 points coming off the bench for ATL.

The Hawks extend their season total to 5-7 and they are 8th in the Eastern Conference. The Celtics fall to 9-3 but stay comfortable in 2nd place and 3 games behind the undefeated Cavaliers.

Detroit Pistons 123 – Miami Heat 121

Tyler Herro – 40 PTS – 5 REB – 8 AST – 4 STL

Cade Cunningham – 21 PTS – 7 REB – 9 AST

The Pistons came out in a huge way last night, at a time they even held a 18 point lead in the second quarter, and just like most games, the tide turned in the Heat’s and Herro’s favor. Tyler Herro had an absolutely amazing night, with his stats found above. Herro’s incredible night was enough to help Miami get into overtime, where Miami finally saw its first lead.

There was 1.8 seconds left on the game clock and Tyler Herro made a 8’ shot to put the Heat in front by two. Then it was Jalen Duren with an alley-oop game-tying dunk to bring the game score even at 121 to 121.

With 1.1 seconds left on the clock, the Miami Heat head coach, Erik Spoelstra called a timeout. This isn’t a problem, but is a major problem when you don’t have any more timeouts. The Heat we’re charged with a technical foul for excessive timeouts. Malik Beasley was called to ice the game and did. Making 1/2 of his free throws to win the game for the Pistons.
