The Arizona Diamondbacks have announced multiple roster moves following the off day on Thursday, all of these were first broken by Gambo987 on Twitter/X so make sure to go give him a follow over there.
After only appearing in 8 games, Jordan Lawlar has been sent down to Triple-A Reno. Despite the huge hype surrounded around Lawlar’s call-up, he unfortunately wasn’t able to record a hit in 19 plate appearances. He struck out nine times and only walked three times.
Personally, in my opinion Lawlar got called up during a time when all of our position players were healthy and active. Which really didn’t give him as many opportunities to get acquainted and comfortable at the MLB level as he would’ve if he was an everyday player. He also faced pitchers like Justin Verlander, Yamamoto and others who are pitching at an All-Star level this season. Unfortunately that ends Lawlar’s time on the MLB team for the time being, but i’m sure if next season (or even this season) a spot we’re to open up, expect Lawlar to receive the call-up once again.
In replacement for Jordan Lawlar, is Illdemaro Vargas. Who recently opted-out of his MiLB contract with the Arizona Diamondbacks, and got re-signed by the Diamondbacks to the major-league level.
Vargas has played in 49 games this season for the Reno Aces, and in 199 plate appearances, he has 52 hits, 79 total bases, 35 RBI’s and 5 home runs. He’s batting a .261 batting average, with a .330 OBP, .397 SLG and a .727 OPS.
He seems to switch between 2B, SS and 3B and has above a .920 FLD % across all three positions. The Diamondbacks will more than likely use Vargas in the same capacity as they did Lawlar. Playing certain days to give Perdomo, Marte or Suarez an off day if needed.
Kevin Ginkel is also being sent down to Triple-A Reno, after a tough start to the season. Ginkel is being sent down to specifically work on fastball command, he was prioritizing his splitter more, since he couldn’t trust his fastball. Ginkel has a 12.60 ERA this season in only 10 innings pitched.
Jeff Brigham will receive the call-up in replacement of Kevin Ginkel. Brigham’s best pitch is his sweeper, and while he does walk more batters then average, he can also strike them out. In 20.2 IP, Brigham has allowed 16 hits, 12 runs, and has struck out 32 batters. He has a 5.23 ERA with a 1.21 WHIP.
His fastball looks really good and his cutter sits around the low 90’s. The Diamondbacks are looking to see if Brigham can be the light the bullpen needs.
K/9 = 13.94
BB/9 = 3.92
HR/9 = 2.18
H/9 = 6.97
Now the Arizona Diamondbacks 40-man roster sits at 41. Which means someone will need to be DFA’d or placed on the 60-day IL.
The Diamondbacks DFA’d Joe Mantiply, after a tough start to his 2025 campaign, he was sent down to Reno and wasn’t able to really turn it back around. In 10 games at Reno, he appeared in 11.1 innings, allowed 14 hits and allowed 7 runs. Mantiply in six seasons with the Diamondbacks appeared in 250 games, pitched 210.1 innings and allowed 101 runs and had 190 strikeouts.
Mantiply will be owed 1.5m if the Diamondbacks aren’t able to find a trade partner. He played a huge part in the Diamondbacks postseason run in 2023, and is quite unfortunate to see him get sent away like this. Hopefully the Diamondbacks are able to work out a deal to bring him back in a D-backs uniform. Regardless, Mantiply did great things in his time in Arizona, and while most fans remember the bad parts. The good parts definitely outshined those. Good luck in your future endeavors, Joe!
The Diamondbacks are trying anything and everything to stay ahead of this skid. They’ve dropped 7 out of their last 8 games, and while Lovullo and Mike Hazen aren’t worried. The fans definitely are, so what i say to that is, give them some time. The season isn’t over yet, and if we are still having this conversation near All-Star break, then we can worry. But until then, this is just a rough patch that every team endures. No matter if your roster costs 1bn+ or 150m+.
