ARIZONA – The Diamondbacks avoided the series sweep against the Nationals on Sunday, but unfortunately that win was overshadowed by the fear of a long term injury to Corbin Burnes. During the fifth inning of the Diamondbacks game yesterday, Corbin Burnes allowed a hit, which was then followed by an expletive.

Burnes quickly called out the trainers and the infield gathered around. Burnes appeared to tell the trainer, “my elbow, it’s done” “it’s dead”. Burnes was quickly removed after that.

His velocity was noticeably down as when i was watching, his cutter that was topping out at 94-95mph, then was struggling to hit 93 by the fourth inning.

Burnes and Lovullo described it as ‘right elbow discomfort’. He was scheduled to have a MRI today and will not be traveling with the team for the upcoming road trip against the Braves.

Lovullo spoke with the media and after said “usually i would tell you guys im minimally concerned, i am more then that.”

Despite the overshadow of Burnes injury, the Diamondbacks played some solid baseball, which was very much needed. The defense specifically stood out, specifically by Vargas when he backed up Naylor on a tough play to avoid the hit and the potential error.

Unfortunately the bats fell asleep after the first inning of play, after the Diamondbacks scored 3 runs in the first inning. They weren’t able to get a hit after that. Which would’ve been a huge negative if the bullpen didn’t hold up their end of the bargain.

The Diamondbacks bullpen combined for ZERO earned runs through 4.1 innings pitched, 2 hits, 7 strikeouts and only 2 walks. After weeks of getting the short end of the stick from fans, the bullpen finally held their end of the deal. Christian Mena got the win for his first career MLB win and JMart got his fourth save of the season.

Corbin Carroll did not play yesterday, he had a scheduled off-day yesterday, his first full off-day of the season. Hopefully that off day is exactly what he needed, as when we went over his stats in a previous article for his previous games, they weren’t pretty.

Tomorrow the Diamondbacks will face Braves for a three game series, both teams are below .500 and will be looking to get over that hump. Acuña Jr is also back in the lineup since returning from his ACL-tear that he suffered earlier in the season. Acuña since returning, is batting a .324 with 3 home-runs. Zac Gallen will get the ball tomorrow and will be looking to turn that 5.54 ERA around. His ERA is top-10 of worse qualified starting pitchers.
