It was another explosive intersquad matchup between the Old Pueblo Tribe Gold and Red, which not only featured 20 runs, and 23 hits, it also included a 8 run inning comeback by the Old Pueblo Tribe Red, which helped them lock down the win.
The Old Pueblo Tribe Red was the home team, which meant that Angel Faras was sent to lock down the Gold for the first inning of work.
The game started off with a weak contact fly out to centerfield to get the first out of the game. Soon after, Angel Faras showed off his patience at the plate and was able to draw a walk. Which brought up Marcus Catalano to the plate, after a three-pitch battle, Catalano was able to single on a line drive to left field. Angel Faras was able to show off his speed as well, making it home from 1st on a single. Catalano was able to advance to second, which eventually helped the Gold get their second run of the game. After a wild pitch, Catalano was able to reach from second to home, which gave the Gold a two run lead in the first inning of work.
In the bottom of the first, Tyler Jacobsen came out to start the game for the Gold, and did an excellent job locking down the Red for their first inning of work. Jacobsen got two quick outs on weak groundouts to the infield, and after allowing back-to-back singles. Jacobsen found his groove and was able to get an another weak contact out to the infield for the third and final out of the inning.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 0 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 2 / 2nd INN
The second inning started with Robert Valenzuela reaching on an error by the first baseman, which brought up Gilbert Valenzuela. G.Valenzuela was able to draw the walk, but R.Valenzuela unfortunately got caught stealing. Alex Gamez was then able to produce the backwards K strikeout on Devin Henderson, which brought the inning total to two outs.
Mike De La Cruz (1 RBI) and Adan Koch-Rodriguez both reached base on respective singles but the inning was ended with an out on the base patch after De La Cruz was caught stealing third.
In the bottom of the second inning, Tyler Jacobsen got a perfect 1-2-3 inning with two strikeouts. His third out of the inning was another weak contact groundout to the third baseman for another quick out.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 0 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 3 / 3rd INN
In the top of the third inning, Alex Gamez was able to get a quick inning of work for the Red. He produced two weak contact grounders for two of the outs in the inning. He was also able to get a solid strikeout after a 6-pitch battle.
In the bottom of the third inning, Alex Gamez came up for the Red and complimented his quick inning of work, with a huge lead off double. Michael Vasquez later drew the walk after a 7-pitch battle which included a full count.
Jojo Escarsega continued his good hitting, driving in a 1-run-rbi-single for the Red. Octavio Mendivil also got his first RBI with the Tribe, getting a single to right-field to score the second run for the Red. Mendivil is playing with the Tribe before he heads back to college.
A double play ended the third inning, but the Red were slowly cutting into the Gold’s lead.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 2 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 3 / 4th INN
The Gold came out for the fourth inning of work, ready to add some more runs to the board and that’s exactly what they did. Alex Gamez got the quick strikeout on R.Valenzuela, which brought up G. Valenzuela, he showed off his solid batter’s eye and drew a walk. Alex Gamez then got his 2nd strikeout on Devin Henderson to get the second out of the fourth inning.
Mike De La Cruz was then able to get his second RBI of the night on an rbi-single after G.Valenzuela stole second during De La Cruz’s AB.
Adan Koch-Rodriguez after seeing a first pitch strike, was able to slow it down and draw a 4-1 walk. Angel Faras then got his first RBI of the night, Mike De La Cruz was able to score, as well as Koch-Rodriguez. Faras was then caught advancing to second after Adan reached home on an error, but that didn’t stop the damage that was done. The Gold had extended their lead by three to make it a 6-2 ballgame.
Tyler Jacobsen then came out once again and got his second 1-2-3 inning of the night, striking out two and producing another weak fly out to the second baseman.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 2 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 6 / 5th INN
Danifer Diaz came in to replace Alex Gamez in the fifth inning, and was tasked with facing Marcus Catalano out of the bullpen. Catalano made quick work and got a triple to right field.
Alex Gamez: 4.0 IP, 6 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 4 BB, 6 SO
Mark Lynam, who is coming off of an earlier player of the game performance was able to bring in Catalano on a 1-run RBI single to center field. R.Valenzuela and G.Valenzuela both were able to draw walks in their respective at bats. Devin Henderson was up to bat and was able to load the bases after being hit by a pitch, but Diaz was able to find his groove for a three-pitch strikeout to get the third out of the inning and limit the damage to a singular run.
Tyler Jacobsen then came out for his fifth inning of work and once again made quick work on the Red. He was able to produce a quick groundout to the second baseman, and after hitting Michael Vasquez with a pitch. He locked it down for two quick outs to the outfield.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 2 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 7 / 6th INN
Adan Koch-Rodriguez kicked off the top of the sixth inning with a huge lead off double on the first pitch. Angel Faras then came up to bat and grounded out to second but it did advance Adan over to third base, which proved to be beneficial for the Gold.
Marcus Catalano was up to bat and after a wild pitch, Koch-Rodriguez was able to score from third and showed off his speed. Catalano was then able to draw the walk, but after a strikeout by Danifer Diaz and a fly out, he was once again able to limit the damage to a minimum.
Octavio Mendivil was up to bat and was able to bang his second hit of the night for a huge single. He had a good at-bat, and waited for his pitch. Art Madrigal then hit a huge 1-run-RBI-double to center field which allowed Mendivil to touch home plate.
Jacobsen was then able to get into his rhythm and get three quick outs to end the inning, and only held the Red to a single run.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 3 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 8 / 7th INN
Cris Tejada then came in to replace Danifer Diaz in the 7th inning of play, and was able to make quick work getting a strikeout after a six-pitch battle. Devin Henderson was then able to draw the walk, with Mike De La Cruz hitting into a fly-out to center. During the at-bat, Henderson was able to steal second base as well. Koch-Rodriguez was also able to draw the walk, and for the fifth batter of the inning, Tejada forced them into weak contact and was able to secure the third out of the inning with no runs scored, nor hits.
Danifer Diaz: 2.0 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 3 BB, 3 SO
Tyler Jacobsen then came in for his seventh inning of work, and after Tony Villegas reached on an error and Michael Vasquez reached on a single, that called for Adan Koch-Rodriguez to take the mound.
Tyler Jacobsen: 6.0 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 5 SO
Jojo Escarsega was then up to bat, with no outs and two runners on and he was able to draw the walk after a five-pitch battle with Koch-Rodriguez. After a hit-by-pitch, that scored the first run of the inning, the players didn’t know it yet. But that run was the start of a huge comeback.
Octavio Mendivil was able to reached on an error after a dropped ball by the center fielder and was able to advance to second. Jojo Escarsega and Michael Vasquez scored, with two runners still in scoring position. Art Madrigal then singled on a ball hit to left field, getting his second RBI of the night for the Red.
Octavio Mendivil then showed off his awareness during the game and when a wild pitch was thrown, he went straight to home and scored. That run to home was the run that tied the ballgame. Tucson High player, Xavier Silvas who is also playing some games with the Tribe, also drew the walk during this. Cris Tejada then came up to bat and was able to also draw a walk. This brought up Tony Villegas, who grounded into a fielder’s choice, but it did end up scoring Madrigal, and advanced all runners but Tejada, who was caught on the rundown to second.
Michael Vasquez then came up to bat and during his AB, Villegas stole second and put him in scoring position. That stolen base ended up being huge for Vasquez. Vasquez on the sixth pitch of the at-bat, doubled on a line drive to left field, scoring Xavier Silvas and Tony Villegas.
Jojo Escarsega was able to draw the walk, but soon after the third out of the inning was recorded. The Old Pueblo Tribe had completed a huge 8-run inning, and took a 3-run lead during that as well.
Old Pueblo Tribe Red 11 – Old Pueblo Tribe Gold 8 / 8th INN
According to GameChanger, the eighth inning was the final inning played. It started off with a Marcus Catalano and Mark Lynam singles. R.Valenzuela then reached base on a fielders choice. He was successful stealing second, while Catalano reached home during an error by the catcher. Valenzuela then was caught trying to steal third.
Kaiden Reeves came into the game, and did impressive and quick work. He got a quick out on Mendivil for the first out of the game on a fly out to third. Then after allowing a walk to Art Madrigal, he got two straight strikeouts to end the inning with only a singular baserunner.
The Old Pueblo Tribe Red took the win a 11-9 victory over their intersquad counterpart, The Old Pueblo Tribe Gold. Another huge game of fireworks between the two teams. Their next matchup is this Saturday, and the location is still being figured out, but I will update across the socials as soon as I’m aware.
