During Sunday’s matchup between the Mets and the Mariners, Rob Manfred was on ESPN’s broadcast, holding an interview with the broadcast squad. MLB commissioner mentioned the likelihood of adding 2 expansion teams, as well as rearranging the divisions based on location.

“I think if we expand, it provides us with an opportunity to geographically realign,” Manfred said during the broadcast. “I think we could save a lot of wear and tear on our players in terms of travel. I think our postseason format would be even more appealing for entities like ESPN because you’d be playing out of the East, out of the West and that 10 o’clock where we sometimes get Boston-Anaheim would be two West Coast teams. That 10 o’clock slot that’s a problem for us sometimes becomes a real opportunity for our West Coast audience.”

Manfred has mentioned multiple times before that he wishes to expand the league to 32 teams before he ultimately retires in the year 2029. All though the clubs may not be playing by that time, the plan is to get them in the league by the time the Rays and Athletics stadiums are built.

Rob Manfred mentioned the tough logistics and scheduling, if the hypothetical playoff matchup of the Angels VS Red Sox were to happen.

“The toughest thing for us in the playoffs is always Anaheim against Boston (in a hypothetical matchup) on those four-game days in the Division Series. You’re either playing too early for the people in Anaheim or too late for the people in Boston,” Manfred said at the time. “Realignment has always been a difficult issue in baseball. You can make an argument that the demise of at least one commissioner (Fay Vincent in 1992) began with the issue of realignment. The reality of today’s media environment is that if you went to 32 teams and you could get to a more geographically-based alignment, you could help your playoff format, you could reduce your travel, you could more easily discuss things like a split season.”

Sources say that the cities most likely to receive an expansion team are Salt Lake City and Nashville. Manfred has continued to mention any identifying cities that may get the expansion team.

“The cities that are out there almost exclusively have been cities that have self-reported. They’re coming to us saying we’d like to have (a team),” Manfred told CNBC last month, noting that the two cities would likely include one Eastern time zone-based market and one in the Mountain or Pacific time zone. “There’s a whole list of them and I don’t like to differentiate between them because we’re just not at that point yet in the process.”
