It was reported that the NBA and its players union are fully supporting limitations on the kind of prop bet that sportsbooks would be allowed to accept for NBA games.
NBAPA representatives said that they are looking into the idea on adding more restrictions to prop betting. If you aren’t aware of what a prop bet is, allow me to explain.
A prop bet, for example is you betting on a certain player to reach a certain number of points, rebounds, and/or assists. Other things included are three pointers made, blocks and steals.
Betting has continued to be a problem within sports leagues, with the NBA recently banning Jontay Porter from the league after he pled guilty in federal court to a felony for manipulating his performance to help bettors win their prop bets on him.
Terry Rozier and Malik Beasley are also some of the latest names who are currently under federal investigation related to sports gambling.
The NBA did conduct its own investigation on Rozier’s situation and they couldn’t find a violation of NBA rules.
“Protecting the integrity of our game is paramount, and we believe reasonable limitations on certain prop bets should be given due consideration,” an NBA spokesperson said. “Any approach should aim to reduce the risk of performance manipulation while ensuring that fans who wish to place prop bets can continue to do so via legal, regulated markets.”
The spokesperson also mentioned that the NBAPA would be open to creating some limitations around prop betting if it helped lower the amount of abuse that the players receive when they don’t hit a certain bet.
